Jad Engine Conference Room
The Jad Engine Conference Room is a chat room hosted on Assembla's XMPP chat server. The chat room offers limited persistent chat history and in our experience is much more reliable than IRC. In order to connect to this room, you first need to be registered with Assembla. After you have registered, you will need to point your browser to http://www.assembla.com/spaces/watch/jadengine to automatically gain permissions to the server by becoming an official "Watcher" of the Jad Engine project. You will also need an XMPP client. In the following walk through the XMPP client used is Pidgin, and this is the client used by most of the current Jade developers.
Connecting to the Protocol
The first step towards joining the Jad Engine Conference Room is to create an XMPP account. A nice feature of XMPP is that it also allows instant messaging. The steps to create an XMPP account and connect to Assembla's server in Pidgin are as follows (this information is useful for other clients as well):
- Start Pidgin and select Accounts | Manage to view the Accounts dialog. If you are starting Pidgin for the first time, it will automatically ask you to create a new account and you can skip this step.
- Select the Add button and choose XMPP as the Protocol.
- The Username field should contain your Assembla login name.
- The Domain is chat.assembla.com, and the Resource can be anything (default is Home).
- The Password field should contain your Assembla password.
- On the Advanced tab, enable Require SSL/TLS and Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams.
- Save this account and make sure that it is enabled (checkbox in the Accounts dialog).
You are now connected to Assembla's XMPP chat server. The next step is to connect to the Conference Room.
