Free Formats Player

Welcome to FFP's official website.

Free Formats Player is a project to design (mostly portable) device(s) capable to play free (as in freedom, also "open") multimedia formats. Currently only planning...

...but you can contribute!

Don't expect that our products will be available to purchase. They are intended to be DIY devices.

Our devices

  • Portable Audio player 1 - planning, intended to provide good sound quality without needless functions that increase price.

Formats we want to support

Audio: FLAC, Vorbis, WV (if enough memory)

Why Vorbis? Because it provides better compression than mp3 and it is patent-free.

Why FLAC? Because it's free and open, and is a standard of lossless audio in p2p networks. ;)

Why Wavpack? Because it's free and open, and provides interesting hybrid mode.

Why not MP3? Because it's patented and provides crappy compression. But don't worry, if you are smart enough to build portable audio player from schematics, converting mp3 to Vorbis with ffmpeg is a snap for you.

We will support any open format if it will fit in MCU's flash memory.
